Detecting superficial pharyngeal cancer has become easy due to the development of endoscopic devices. Early diagnosis of pharyngeal cancer can contribute to minimally invasive treatment, resulting in better quality of life and preferable prognosis of patients. Previous history of upper aerodigestive tract cancer, drinking, and smoking are the major risk factors for pharyngeal cancer, and the hypopharynx is the most frequent site where pharyngeal cancer occurs. This information can help us in efficient detection of pharyngeal cancer. Pharyngeal observation is technically challenging due to the pharyngeal reflex and anatomically closed space. Pethidine hydrochloride can decrease the pharyngeal reflex and patient discomfort. Vocalization, appropriate patient position, and the Valsalva maneuver can improve the visualization of the closed space. When the Valsalva maneuver is not sufficient, a super soft hood can be used to achieve a detailed pharyngeal examination.
