  • Look Inside

In recent years, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has become the most valuable diagnostic method for pancreatic and biliary diseases. However, successful ERCP in children has been very scarce. This report persents the ERCP performed in two children.

One was a 6-year-old boy weighing 19 kg. ERCP was successfully performed using JF-B2 under general anesthesia and both biliary and pancreatic ducts were clearly visualized. The diagnosis of congential choledochal cysts was established.

The other was a 13-year-old boy. ERCP showed a partial stenosis and dilatation of the pancreatic duct. Operation disclosed tumorous lesions involving the duct system. Hystopathological diagnosis of the tumor was Burkitt's lymphoma developing retroperitoneally.

In our opinion ERCP is the most suitable method for the diagnosis of congenital choledochal cyst. The abnormal confluence of the bile and the pancreatic ducts associated with this disease can be observed clearly by this procedure. The study of the abnormal connection of the both ducts will be useful in solving the pathogenesis of congenital cysts and determining the method of operation.

When duodenofiberscopy will be more improved ERCP will also be possible in the new born infant. Then the differential diagnosis of congenital biliary atresia and other congenital failures in infants causing jaundice will be established endoscopically.
