  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A 18 year-old-girl was admitted to our clinic complaining of lower abdominal pain and bloody stool since three months before.

The initial barium enema and the colonofiberscopy showed marked stricture of the sigmoid colon. About two weeks later, the enlargement of its stricture was shown on the radiological and endoscopical findings. Histological examination of the biopsy specimen revealed moderate colitis. Laparotomy proved the so-called pelvic peritonitis, that is, the inflammatory cyst at Douglas's space and severe inflamation of the serosa and the mesentery at the sigmoid colon.

Benign stricture of recto-sigmoid region is caused by two main diseases; the lesions of the large intestine itself and the lesions of the organs neighboring on it. The follow-up study by barium enema and colonofiberscopy is useful to the differential diagnosis of stricture of the sigmoid colon.
