  • Look Inside

Three thousand four handred and ninteen patients with recurrence of gastric cancer, who were treated by the members of the Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer, were analysed statistically from the standpoint of the time of recurrence, and many interesting results were obtained.

The distribution of the time of recurrence, that is, postoperative free interval, was verified to show the log normal distribution. The time of recurrence of gastric cancer had statistically significant relationship between the site of recurrences, duration of symptoms, survival after recurrence, age of the patients, the site and macroscopic size of the gastric cancer, the difference of early or advanced gastric cancer, Borrmann's classification, histological classification, grading of infiltrative growth tendency, grade of extension and penetration, degree of lymph node metastasis at the time of gastrectomy, classification of gastric resection based on the extent of lymph node removal, adjuvant chemotherapy and existence of simultaneous multiple gastric cancer at the time of gastrectomy.

From the standpoint of chronology of gastric cancer, the author suggest the idea that some of the factors, those are related to the time of recurrence of gastric cancer, should have intimate relation to the doubling time of the gastric cancer.
