Fifteen cases with gastric cancer which revealed shrinkage or disappearance of ulcer craters were studied in details about their clinical data and histopathological findings of their resected specimens. The results are followings.

 1. These 15 cases (17 lesions) are divided into 5groups according to the microscopical features of carcinoma, ulcer in it and regenerating mucosa covering the ulcer floors. 1) Open type (4 lesions), 2) Semiopen type (2 lesions), 3) Sanctuary type (5 lesions), 4) Stratum type (2 lesions), 5) Cancerous epithelium type (4 lesions),

 2. In cases which show remarkable shrinkage of ulcer craters in relatively short term and are submitted to gastric resection shortly after it, their ulcer floors have been covered chiefly with nonmalignant regenerating mucosa. The more prolonged is the interval between scar-formation and surgery, the larger becomes that part of ulcer floors which is occupied by cancerous tissues.

 3. Thus, the life cycle of malignant ulcers is considered as follows: it begins from open type, then preceeding in the following order, sanctuary type, stratum type, cancerous epithelium type and presenting open type again.

 4. It is shown that in the excavated type of early gastric cancers the shrinkage or disappearance of their ulcer craters not infrequently occurs, (In our cases it occurred in 56%).
