Of 129 lesions of depressed type of early gartric cancer found in 174 lesions (169 cases) of it, experienced up to Aug. 1968 in Katsuki Department of Internal Medicine, Kyushu Univ. and its allied institutions, 72 lesions preoperatively followed up by endoscopy for more than 1 week together with 2 lesions of Ⅲ+Ⅱc-type-like advanced carcinoma have been correlated with one another regarding pictures of the initial endoscopy and those of the final one. Changes of Ⅱc lesions observed in between and now properly evaluated are as follows:

 1. In 56 cases of Ⅱc type and Ⅱc+Ⅲ type early gastric cancer, not only were the borders of Ⅱc relatively well visualized, but also its size was comparable to a certain degree with one another, and yet not one case was observed in which enlargement of Ⅱc lesion was detected in the interim. Furthermore, 6 cases followed up for more than 2 years were included in this group. These facts seem to indicate that the pace of spread in depressed type early gastric cancer horizontal to the level of the gastric mucosa may possibly be fairly slow.

 2. In Ⅲ+Ⅱc type early gastric cancer, pictures of Ⅱc are liable to change according to the activity of ulcer lesion. Ⅱc may diminish in size, drawn together by contraction of the submucosal layer and underneath at the time of ulcer diminition. When ulcer becomes active and enlarged, Ⅱc may again reduce in size, now being narrowed from inside by ulceration. These possibilities are each illustrated in this paper.
