  • Look Inside

This study included 105 cases with gastric ulcers treated with 300 mg ranitidine per day. There were six cases (5.7%) showing a protruding change of the ulcer base in its healing process.

We defined this type of gastric ulcer as protruded type in contrast to common type. The former, being larger than the latter (p<0.05), was observed a little bit more frequently in the body than in the angulus at five weeks on an average.

Furthermore, the protruded type required shorter interval than the common type in evolving from active stage to healing stage (p<0.05). The reverse was true, however, for the interval necessary to develop from healing stage to scarring stage (p<0.05). Consequently, though statistically not significant, the protruded type needed more days to be cured than the common type did.

Based on these observations, it is speculated that different types of healing process are caused by the unbalanced rate of repairment between in the ulcer floor and at the ulcer edge.
