  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

It is a well known fact that gastric cancer is a serious health problems in Chile. The mortality rate adjusted by age was 32 per 100,000 population in 1970. In 1972 mortality rate for females reached 24.4 per 100,000 and for males 36.3 per 100,000 population. According to these numbers gastric cancer produces the highest mortality rates owed to malignancy either in male or female.

The high frequency is associated with very bad prognosis in such way that overall survival rate after 5 years is hardly 6.6%. This is due, principally, to the fact that diagnosis is made in very advanced stages. Cases of early gastric cancer are seen sporadically in Chile.
