During endoscopic examination, HGM(heterotopic gastric mucosa)is a non-neoplastic lesion which is most often encountered in the duodenum. Although endoscopic diagnosis of HGM composed of multiple lesions is comparatively easy, the one composed of a single lesion sometimes needs differential diagnosis with other neoplastic tumors, such as adenoma, early cancer and carcinoid tumor. Drilling biopsy and endoscopic ultrasonography are useful for the differential diagnosis of ectopic pancreas and carcinoid tumor. Furthermore, in differential diagnosis of diffuse mucosal lesions in the duodenum such as amyloidosis, infectious disease and a certain kind of malignant lymphoma, it is important to bear these diseases in mind and obtain from the pathologist a histological diagnosis of the biopsy specimen.
