Reflux esophagitis or GERD(gastroesophageal reflux disease)is diagnosed by symptoms, sphincter dysfunction, pH monitoring, and endoscopic finding as well as histopathological findings. Representative histopathological findings of reflux esophagitis are balloon cells, venular dilatation or extravasated red cells in the papillae, papillary elongation, and inflammatory cell infiltrates in the lamina propria, intraepithelial neutrophil, eosinophil and/or lymphocyte infiltration, and basal zone hyperplasia. These findings are not specific for reflux esophagitis, and are also found in other type of esophagitis. Reflux esophagitis is a reversible disease and histopathological findings vary according to stage and grade of the disease and the biopsied site. Thus, reflux esophagitis is diagnosed not only by biopsy specimen but also by clinical findings.
