  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

In this prospective study, we aimed at examining the prevalence of reflux esophagitis in 6,010 Japanese adults, as evaluated by endoscopy. The overall prevalence of esophagitis was 16.3%. Most of the subjects with esophagitis were classified into grade A or B according to the Los Angeles Classification of Esophagitis. Severe cases of esophagitis (grade C and D) increased in frequency in females over 60 years old. These data indicated that reflux esophagitis is a common disease in Japan, especially among Japanese elderly women.
