The treatment for esophageal cancer includes endoscopic resection(EMR/ESD), surgical operation, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and these effective combinations improve the curability. However, the invasiveness of these treatments varies widely and it has been impossible to identify the optimum combinations for each case. To develop a prediction program of the treatment effect of definitive chemoradiotherapy to esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, we are now running a big project on prospective analysis of the association between treatment effects and genetic profiles of the biopsy specimens taken from the primary site before treatment. Furthermore, our final goal is to develop an accurate prediction program, to determine what treatment strategy is the best to obtain high curability and lower toxicity in each case.
