　放線菌感染症(actinomycosis)は，主にActinomyces israeliiの感染による化膿性疾患である．腹部・骨盤型の感染の経路は従来口腔から嚥下した放線菌の腸管壁内侵入によると考えられていた．それに加え，子宮内避妊器具(intrauterine device ; IUD)使用により，外陰部・腟から子宮を通る上行性感染も重要と考えられるようになった．腹部・骨盤型の放線菌症では，充実性の腫瘤を形成することが多く，菌の検出も困難で，画像所見も非特異的なため悪性腫瘍との鑑別が困難である．

　Actinomycosis is caused by Actinomyces israelii, a normal inhabitant of the mouth and gastrointestinal tract.

　Orally ingested organisms cause abdominal infection. The recent literature also suggests an association of abdominal actinomycosis with long-term use of intrauterine devices. Clinically this disease has an indolent course. Making a diagnosis of actinomycosis is difficult because of the difficulty of making cultures and also because of non-specific radiologic findings.
