Bleeding from gastrointestinal cancer is caused by the defect of normal epithelial mucosa and promoted by the neovascularity of the tumor and the fragility of its vascular construction.

The first most frequently encountered sign leading to the diagnosis of advanced esophageal cancer is dysphagia and bleeding is a symptom only rarely encountered.

The bleeding from advanced esophageal cancer is often fatal for the patient because of its great amount. This bleeding comes not only from the surface of the cancer but also directly from the aorta and from the proper esophageal artery or bronchial artery due to penetration by the cancerous ulcer and necrosis. Bleeding from this type of cancer causes sudden shock, and the patient usually dies immediately before treatment can be performed.

The concept of bleeding from esophageal cancer and its treatment is reported.
