Introduction

"All vertebrates possess mechanisms for regulat-ing the acid-base environment in extra-and intracellular compartments to produce an optimal hydrogen ion activity……. The defended parameter appears to be the charge state of proteins, in turn dependent on the extent of dissociation of peptide-linked histidine imidazole groups……. By protect-ing from change the fractional dissociation of these protein groups, a wide array of protein enzymatic and transport activities dependent on protein charge state are available to the organism1)."
