Intensive care survivors often suffer from “Post Intensive Care Syndrome” (PICS), which negatively affects patients' physical, mental and cognitive functions and quality of life. It also has a huge burden on the patients' caregivers. Patients are not only at risk of dying, but also of rehospitalization. Although various interventions are under investigation to prevent or ameliorate the impact of PICS, none have been convincingly shown to be effective. The concept of ICU survivorship should be explained to everyone involved in the care of patients surviving critical illness.
