サイトメガロウイルスはエイズ患者や移植患者などの免疫不全宿主に種々の日和見感染症を起こすほか，先天性感染として現在最も重要な病原因子と位置付けられている．有効なワクチンの開発がもたらす恩恵は非常に大きいと予想されるのに対し，その認識は一般社会においても医療従事者の間においてすらも著しく低い．現在開発が進められているワクチンはいくつかあるが，最も治験が進んでいるgBサブユニットワクチンを含め，認可のめどが立ったものはない．

CMV (cytomegalovirus) is an opportunistic pathogen in the immunocompromized host such as AIDS patients and transplant recipients, and is the most important congenital pathogen.　The theoretical effectiveness of a hypothetical CMV vaccine is estimated to be very high based on quality-adjusted life years.　However, there has been insufficient education about the impact of CMV infections and the benefits to be obtained by development of the vaccine.　Although a number of vaccine candidates have been under investigation, including the gB/MF59 subunit vaccine for which phase II study, has been completed none of them is yet close to clinical application.
