ロタウイルス下痢症により，5歳未満の約40人に1人が合併する脱水症の治療のために入院しており，胃腸炎による乳幼児の入院の約40％を占めている．世界的に使用が承認されているロタウイルスワクチンは，単価ヒトロタウイルスワクチン(Rotarix^(R)，グラクソスミスクライン社)と5価ウシ・ヒトロタウイルス組換え体ワクチン(RotaTeq^(R)，メルク社)との2つである．これらのワクチンの特徴と本邦への導入の必要性とについて解説する．

Rotavirus causes acute gastroenteritis that results in hospitalization because of dehydration in about 1 in 40 children by the age of 5 years.　Such rotavirus disease accounts for approximately 40% of gastroenteritis admissions.　Two rotavirus vaccines are globally licensed;they are the monovalent human rotavirus vaccine (Rotarix^(R):GlaxoSmithKiline) and the pentavalent human-bovine reassortant vaccine (RotaTeq^(R):Merck).　This paper reviews these vaccines, because they are expected to be introduced into Japan in the near future.
