  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Neurotoxins in the venom of bees wasps and hornets have been reviewed. Apamin, isolated from bee venom is the smallest neurotoxic polypeptide known. It has actions of uncoordinated movements increasing to spasms and convulsions of central origin in rats. In the study of cat spinal reflex, apamine augments polysynaptic reflex and renders excitatory polysynaptic pathways more effective than inhibitory polysynaptic mechanism. Some spicies of wasps (Phylanthus triangulum, Microbracon) venom have peculiar actions to paralyse their preys or hosts. The venom block neuromuscular transmission in insects.
