はじめに

　昏睡を意味する名詞comaと，そのほとんど正反対の覚醒を表わす形容詞vigilより成る，この奇妙なフランス語の術語は，現在およそ二つの意味に使用されているが，命名者をつきとめることは困難であり，したがって，そのオリジナルの意味を正確に把握することはできない。また，coma vigilのほかcoma vigileとスペルされている場合も少なくなく，しかも後者が誤りであるとは必ずしも言い切れない。

　いわゆる植物人間の状態について，"pcrsistent vegetative stateなる名称を提唱したJennettとPlum^22）は，"Coma vigil is an old term, probably first used by French to dcscribe the state of patients with severe typhus or typhoid fever."と述べており，彼らの環境ならびに造詣をもってしても，この語のオリジナルに到達し得なかったものと思われる。

The term "coma vigil" designates in French language only a grade of intensity of "clouding of consciousness": a state in which the patient can be awaked easily with a sensory stimulation and he has paradoxical combinations of symptoms, for example, sleep and wakefulness, psychic depression and agitation, asthenia and delirium, and so on. Hirayama (1971)²⁰⁾ described this state in French meaning in his "Textbook of Neurological Semiology".
