とかく神秘的に捉えられがちなフェロモンとはどういう匂いかをまず再確認する。次に，フェロモンを受容し，処理する二つの嗅覚系（主嗅覚系と鋤鼻系）について簡単に説明する。続いて，現在までに報告されている哺乳動物のフェロモンについて，その匂い源，化学構造，効果などを概説する。なかでも，ゾウとガ，マウスとキクイムシといったまったくかけ離れた動物が同じフェロモンを利用しているとか，雄ブタの唾液中の性ホルモンがフェロモンとして作用しているとか，揮発性化合物とリポカリンタンパク質との複合体がプライマーフェロモンの本体であるなどがとくに注目される。最後に，個体や群れの認知といった微妙な差の識別に関わる匂いは，いわゆる複合臭で，各構成成分の比率の差が識別に関わることなどに触れる。

The term pheromone was originally defined for insect as substances which are secreted to the outside by an individual and received by a second individual of the same species in which they release a specific reaction, for example, a definite behavioural or developmental process. Pheromones have been classified further into two categories according to the type of reaction they evoke signalling (releaser) and primer pheromones. Signalling pheromones produce an immediate change in behaviour, whereas primer pheromones produce a neuroendocrine or developmental change which is slow to develop and requires prolonged stimulation.
