サルの道具使用と身体像

道具を手にすると，それは手の延長として機能する。このとき道具が手の一部に同化した内観を持つ―すなわち身体像が変化する。サルの頭頂間溝前壁部には，体性感覚と視覚とを統合して身体像をコードすると考えられるニューロン群が存在する．熊手状の道具を使って手の届かない遠方の餌をとる様にニホンザルを訓練して，道具使用前後でこれらのニューロンの活動特性を比較した。すると，道具使用前には手・前腕の体性感覚受容野の周囲の空間に存在した視覚受容野は，道具使用後には熊手の柄にそってその先端まで延長した。また，道具使用前には手・腕の到達範囲の空間に対応した視覚受容野は，道具使用後には道具による到達範囲に拡大した。この神経現象は，道具使用に伴って身体像が変化する心理現象に対応するものと考えられる。

When using a tool it becomes an extension of the hand both physically and perceptually―the tool is incorporated into our body image, or body schemata. Although accumulation of psychological evidence indicates body image is modified during tool use, its neural mechanism is entirely unknown as yet. We trained macaque monkeys to retrieve distant objects (beyond the limit of the reach of the innate arm) using a rake as a tool, and neuronal activity was recorded in the anterior bank and the fundus of the intraparietal sulcus contralateral to the hand using a tool.
