  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Motor or procedural skills are acquired by long-term practice. This is a feature that distinguishes voluntary movements from reflexes or fixed action patterns. This is a feature that allows us to carry out complex procedures efficiently. Such procedures are usually composed of a sequence of elementary movements which initially requires selective attention to perform them. After long-term practice, however, we become able to carry them out nearly automatically. Such automated procedures would then be used as elementary actions to generate higher-order procedural skills.
