Evoked potentials and event-related potentials

はじめに

　非侵襲的に脳機能を評価する手法の中でも，脳波および各種誘発電位を用いて脳内神経細胞の電気活動を検討する手法は，比較的長い歴史を持つ。各種刺激に伴って頭皮上から得られる大脳誘発電位（cerebralevoked potential）は，刺激に直接関連して比較的短い潜時で生じ，感覚や知覚という外因性の要素を反映する刺激関連電位（stimulus-related potential）と，刺激の性状の認知（recognition）といった内因性の要素に関連し潜時の長い事象関連電位（event-relatedpotential）に大きく分類される。一般に，これらの頭皮上から記録される脳波を用いた手法は，高い時間的分解能を有する一方で，空間的分解能については，近年急速に進展を遂げているpositron emission tomography（PET），functional magnetic resonanceimaging（functional MRI），magnetoencephalography（MEG）などにくらべ劣っていることは否めない。しかし，その簡便さにより得られる多くの臨床的知見や，難治性てんかん患者の外科的治療を目的として実施される硬膜下電極，深部電極を用いた記録の知見によって，解剖学的関連の検討が盛んに行われている。

Although the electrophysiological techniques, such as electroencephalogram (EEG) and evoked potentials (EPs) recorded from scalp electrodes, have relatively low spatial resolution comparing with other advancing neuroimaging techniques, they are nowadays widely used in various clinical situations for the purpose of non-invasive evaluation of brain functions because of their high temporal resolution and relatively easy availability. A great number of studies based on various clinical recordings, especially invasive recordings from patients with intractable epilepsy, give us many spatial informations about EPs.
