　I．目的

　耳管閉鎖不全に起因する鼻すすり癖が誘因と考えられる中耳病変はMagnusonら^1〜4）によって報告され，わが国でも最近注目されつつある。われわれも，鼻すすり癖に基づく中耳病変を報告して以来その重要性を痛感し，種々の角度より検討を加えてきた^5〜9）。

　しかし，各疾患，とくに真珠腫において鼻すすり癖が誘因と考えられる症例の全症例に対する割合は調査されておらず，鼻すすり癖が持つ重要度が，どの程度かは不明である。

The incidence and clinical features of choles-teatoma, thought to be related to sniffing habit were studied in 105 consecutive cases of acquired choles-teatoma.

Among these cases of cholesteatoma iucluding 112 ears with 93 flaccida type, 15 tensa type, 4 extensive type, 27 cases (31 ears) were diagnosed as sniff-related cholesteatoma. These patients devel-oped the habit of sniffing to reduce aural symptoms caused by insufficient closure of the eustachian tube. Thirty out of 31 ears had flaccida-type choles-teatoma.

In the sniff-related cholesteatoma, the incidence of bilateral abnormality of the eardrum was extremely high. The application of the canal up tympanoplasty for these ears seemed to be danger-ous, because of a risk of recurrence of the disease due to the continuation of the sniffing habit.
