はじめに
昭和60年から63年にわたって"北里大学病院における13年間のがんの実態調査"と題する院内班研究が計画され，大学病院開設（昭和46年7月）より13年間（昭和59年12月まで）における全科の悪性新生物患者の統計的観察を行った。データは，全て大型コンピューターに入力した。
本研究の目的は，われわれの病院におけるがん診療の実態を客観的に評価し，最終的にはがん治療成績の向上を計ることにある。
The rate of the head and neck cancer was 10.5% (761) in 7,230 patients with malignant neoplasms visited Kitasato University Hospital from 1971 to 1984.
Comparing with the results reported in otherinstitutions, it was found that the rate of oral cancer tended to be low and the incidence of thyroid cancer, mesopharygeal cancer, and cancer of the nose and paranasal sinuses were high in our hospital.
Head and neck cancer occurs more frequently than generally reported, so every effort should be made in treatment of these diseases.
