糖尿病の診療における眼科学的検査の重要性については，今更言を新たにする必要がないと思う。近年，我国では，糖尿病の眼合併症に関する論議が再び活発になつており，これについての記載が相次ぐ状況にある。
私も，糖尿病患者の眼科学的諸検査を実施した結果，かなり興味ある知見を得たので，今回はまず，主として眼底病変，就中糖尿病性網膜症の症状と頻度について報告する。
From July 1962 to March 1963 the author himself performed detailed ophthalmological examination of 106 diabetes mellitus cases whose diagnosis was Confirmed by through medical studies conducted by Wada's Internal Medicine Department, Hiroshima University. The following results were obtained.
1. The incidence of diabetic retinopathy in diabetic patients was 29.3% in the male, 52.1% in the female and 39.6% with both sexes put together.
2. The incidence and severity of retinopathy increased gradually from the age group of sixties toward that of forties.
