The death of Dr. Shinobu Ishihara will cause sorrow not only to his friends and profes-sional colleagues in Japan but to ophthalmologists all over the world. Without question he was one of the great figures in our profession whose name has become a household wo-rd. It is true that he lived a long and fruitful life so that he enriched our specialty in many aspects other than his unique work on colour vision, but the death of a scientist so outstanding and of a colleague so courteous must affect us all with profound sorrow.
