  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Effects of superior cervical ganglionectomy, lesion of the medial forebrain bundle and adrenalectomy on glycogen content in the choroidal epithelial cells of adult mice were studied histochemically and electron-microscopically.

Following bilateral superior cervical ganglio-nectomy, small amounts of glycogen granules often appeared in the choroidal epithelial cells of the lateral and fourth ventricles at 3 hours after sur-gery. Thereafter glycogen gradually increased in amount until its content attained maximum at 6-9 hours. However it began to decrease at 12 hours and had disappeared at 24 hours and later. In the choroidal epithelium of the third ventricle, only smaller amounts of glycogen appeared later and disappeared earlier than in the lateral and fourth ventricles. In mice ganglionectomized, reserpine could induce accumulation of large amounts of gly-cogen in the choroidal epithelial cells.

Following bilateral lesion of the medial forebrain bundle, small amounts of glycogen were observed in the choroidal epithelium of the lateral ventricle at 3 hours and in that of the third ventricle at 6 hours. Glycogen gradually increased in amount and reached maximum at 12 hours. It still remained only in small amounts at 24 hours, but disappeared at 48 hours. In the choroidal epithelium of the fourth ventricle, on the other hand, no glycogen appeared throughout the entire course examined.

Following bilateral adrenalectomy, no glycogen accumulation was detected in the choroidal epithelial cells thus far examined. In adrenalectomized mice, however, administration of reserpine induced a strik-ing increase in glycogen in the epithelium of each choroid plexus.

Neither unilateral sympathetic ganglionectomy, nor unilateral lesion of the forebrain bundle, nor partial lesion of the frontal lobe of the brain and nor sham operation caused glycogen appearance in the choroid epithelial cells.
