We compared the clinical pictures and the results of the Rorschach test for 103 obese patients with and without binge eating disorder (BED) to understand the personality of BED patients. There were 63 patients without BED (BED-Group) and 40 patients with BED (BED+Group).

The BED-Group experienced the onset of obesity at a significantly higher mean age than the BED+Group. They had a lower body mass index and most of them were in their thirties. According to the results of the Rorschach test, patients in the BED-Group had relatively high scores in reality testing and were very loathe to accept their situation. The BED+Group had a significantly younger mean age at the onset of obesity, a higher body mass index and were predominantly in their twenties. The Rorschach test indicated that patients in the BED+Group had a low score in reality testing and their dependency-love need was found to be suppressed. They had characteristics of borderline personality organization.

We should recognize that there is BED in obese patients and psychiatric intervention is found to be beneficial for such patients.
