Gastrointestinal infections are among the most common infectious diseases worldwide, causing significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Accurate and timely identification of the causative pathogens would be essential for appropriate clinical management, infection control, and public health interventions. In recent years, advances in diagnostic techniques-ranging from traditional culture methods to molecular-based multiplex PCR and next-generation sequencing-have greatly enhanced our ability to detect and characterize gastrointestinal pathogens. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the types of pathogens involved in gastrointestinal infections and outlines the fundamental diagnostic approaches currently used in clinical and public health settings.
