Advances in colonoscopy have increased the chances of encountering early-stage colorectal lesions, and endoscopic resection methods are also being established. Endoscopic resection of colorectal polyps (adenomas), precancerous lesions of colorectal cancer, is known to reduce colorectal cancer morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, surveillance colonoscopy after endoscopic removal of colorectal polyps is also important from the perspective of reducing colorectal cancer incidence and death. In Japan, the surveillance interval after endoscopic removal has traditionally been shorter than in Europe and the USA, but in 2020 the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES) published “Colonoscopy Screening and Surveillance Guidelines”. In this article, we focus on the surveillance interval after endoscopic treatment of neoplastic lesions and compare with European and American guidelines.
