The number of elderly patients suffering from chronic pain for whom routine medical care is unable to identify the pain’s cause and who are resistant to various pain treatments has increased, and healthcare providers are often faced with the difficulty of dealing with this problem in the limited time available for consultation. As one approach, we have investigated the utility of an interdisciplinary pain center that()evaluates elderly patients with chronic pain by using both a disease model and a biopsychosocial model,()identifies the cause(s)of the pain, and()leads to the improvement of the pain, in addition to advising clinicians regarding how to relate to this patient population. Herein, we introduce some of the ways of working with the elderly that have been conducted at our pain center, focusing on specific ways of working with the elderly with chronic pain that can be used in daily practice, information to elicit narratives in dialogue, and basic pain information needed to lead to behavioral change in the elderly.
