In 2020, the IASP(International Association for the Study of Pain)revised its definition of pain. In 2022, classification codes for chronic pain(MG30, et al.)based on the IASP chronic pain classification were added to ICD-11. The Union of Pain-related Associations in Japan was established in 2021, and clinical practice guidelines for the management of chronic pain were issued. In the future, it is expected that clinical practice guidelines for the management of chronic pain will lead to profound developments in clinical practice, research, and treatment of chronic pain. It is also believed that clinical practice guidelines for the management of chronic pain will lead to innovative progress in the treatment of chronic pain. Furthermore, in 2017, the IASP proposed three types of pain mechanisms:nociceptive pain, neuropathic pain, and nociplastic pain. Nociplastic pain is a mechanism formerly referred to as psychogenic, non-organic, or psychosocial pain.

Pain is caused by complex relationships among various factors. Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists or recurs for more than 3 months. Chronic pain is caused by repeated long-term peripheral or central sensitization resulting in neural plasticity. It is further complicated by psychological and social influences. Further elucidation of the mechanisms of chronic pain and advances in treatment methods are desired.
