Coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19)has extended worldwide since the first case was confirmed in China in December 2019. Many people in Japan were infected and approximately 33 million infections and 7,400 deaths have been reported as of April 2023. Many treatments for COVID-19, including respiratory therapy for acute respiratory failure and drug therapy have been evaluated and clinical guidelines have been developed to clarify recommendations regarding COVID-19 treatment. COVID-19 is an infectious disease that should be recognized as systemic, causing not only pulmonary damage but also abnormalities in the circulatory system, such as myocarditis, and in the coagulation system, such as deep vein thrombosis. This underscores the role of intensive care, particularly for patients with severe COVID-19. This article summarizes the current evidence and recommendations for respiratory therapy and drug treatment for severe COVID-19.
