Background:The insertion of an indwelling peripheral venous catheter(PVC)during surgery is a painful procedure that cannot be ignored, and even adult patients require pain relief during this procedure.

Methods:In a prospective observational study, we compared the analgesic effects of the local anesthetic patch method(lidocaine/propitocaine combination, EMLA® patch, 32 patients)and the intradermal injection method(1% procaine hydrochloride, 34 patients).

Results:The level of pain at the catheter insertion as determined by the patients’self-reported result on a visual analogue scale(0-100 mm)was 1.5(median, interquartile range 0-14)for the patch group and 10.5(median, interquartile range 3-25)for the intradermal injection group(P=0.009).

Conclusions:A local anesthetic skin patch may be useful for pain relief during PVC insertion in adult surgical patients.
