The need for anesthesiologists for the provision of anesthesia and sedation outside the operating room has increased in recent years.

MRI examinations for pediatric patients are particularly special in that they require the patient to remain motionless in a high magnetic field, the examination time is relatively long, and it is difficult to observe the patient in detail during the examination. This is a high-risk examination that requires a natural airway and moderate to deep sedation. Safe out-of-operating-room sedation cannot be achieved by anesthesiologists alone. It is important to cooperate with other medical personnel to create standards that match the manpower and medical resource of each hospital.

This article introduces(i)precautions for the sedation of pediatric patients during MRI examinations(ii)and our hospital’s efforts regarding such sedation, based on the Japanese and American guidelines for pediatric sedation.
