重粒子線は,X線やγ線と比較して,高い線量集中性と強い細胞致死作用をもつ。我が国では1994年から放射線医学総合研究所(放医研)で重粒子線治療の臨床試験が開始された。これまで20余年にわたり臨床試験,先進医療が続けられ,2016年には切除不能の骨軟部腫瘍に対する重粒子線治療が,2018年には前立腺癌,頭頸部の非扁平上皮癌に対する重粒子線治療が保険適用となった。
Ion beam therapy provides a superior dose distribution in cancer treatment compared to photons. Additionally, carbon-ion beams show a higher relative biological effectiveness, and thus a higher tumor control probability, while delivering a smaller dose to the surrounding normal tissues. Over two decades, we have been investigated the best way of carbon-ion radiotherapy for many malignancies. Uterine cervical adenocarcinoma show poorer prognosis compared to uterine squamous cell carcinoma. The clinical outcome of this disease remains far from satisfactory in conventional therapy. Here, we report the progress of carbon-ion radiotherapy for uterine cervical adenocarcinoma.
