Thirty-two of 1287 patients who were assessed by PET/CT had unilateral accumulation in shoulder joints(morbidity, 2.49%;male, n=22;female, n=10;age, 60±8 years). Frozen shoulder was diagnosed in eight patients with pain(group A)and preclinical frozen shoulder was diagnosed in 24 asymptomatic patients(group B). The SUV max of group A was significantly higher than that of group B(3.43±0.60 vs 3.00±0.57;p<0.05). Scoliosis with bending towards the unaffected side was identified on CT coronal images in 87.5% of asymptomatic patients. The psoas muscles support the vertebrae in the spinal column to maintain posture;thus, sarcopenia starting around the age of 50 years could worsen scoliosis, thus causing the shoulders to pivot. The upper joint of a pivoted shoulder would be constantly jarred by upper extremity weight, resulting in damage to the shoulder joint. Frozen shoulder determined using PET/CT might be attributed to scoliosis combined with sarcopenia.
