Objective: To study an ideal care or hospitalization environment required by mothers through revealing the care provided in a hospital during the mothers' puerperal period.

Subjects and Methods: Five postpartum women who experienced normal pregnancy with normal delivery were surveyed between March 2006 and May 2006. The data collected by the interview method were analyzed in terms of the following two points: the care received in the hospital and the hospitalization environment.

Results: Three categories for care expected by mothers were abstracted.

1) Category in relation to care as a whole expected by mothers, consisting of the following six subcategories; 1. Explanation tailored to individual circumstances, 2. Care prioritized physical recovery of mother, 3. Attentive care, 4. Consistent care, 5. Breastfeeding guidance and breast massage, 6. Gathering information and observing to give mothers the feeling of being cared for by nursing care providers.

2) Category in relation to mental care, consisting of the following three subcategories; 1. Sharing the mother's happiness, 2. Speaking gently to the mother, 3. Not ignoring the mother.

3) Ideal hospitalization environment, consisting of the following three subcategories; 1. Giving the mother information about each step of hospitalization, 2. Accommodating the hospital's schedule, 3. Having a well-equipped physical environment.

Conclusion: Results showed that the care mothers expect first is care with careful attention from nursing care providers and secondly, specialized care from nursing care providers. We consider it essential that, nursing care providers pay consistent attention to the target mother and speak to her with an appropriate sense of timing to provide customized care for each woman.
