Abstract

Recent increase in parenting stresses of mothers has been a wide-range issue from a personal basis to a social interest, and it is a consensus that social assists such as emotional supports may relieve the stresses. Receptive support, belonging to emotional supports, is based on acceptance of a mother as she is. Mothers are often helped and encouraged through social supports; however, receptive support does not encourage but ease them. The effect of social receptive support on parenting stresses were investigated based on a questionnaire survey of 118 infant-rearing mothers. The survey suggested that less perfectionist mothers are less stressed and more likely relieved by high receptive support. In contrast, highly perfectionist mothers were better relieved by modest receptive support than excessive support. Therefore, it is suggested that adequate levels of receptive support according to degrees of perfectionism of respective mothers should be considered.
