Since the commencement of the World Society of Disaster Nursing (WSDN) in February 2008, the organization has shown its commitment to promote international academic exchanges and collaborative research on disaster nursing through a series of conferences held in 2009, 2012 and 2014. These events have provided opportunities for WSDN members and nonmembers alike to bring themselves up to date on disaster management from the perspectives of nursing. As in many discussions about disaster, the conferences have given great enlightenment of how to manage survivors on the onset of catastrophe, but given little emphasis on its preparedness. All disasters are characterized by a cycle in which previous periods considerably influence the responses of affected individuals. For this reason, the 4th Academic WSDN Conference will focus on disaster risk management under the theme The Contribution of Nursing to Disaster Risk Management: Learning from Other Nations.
