Abstract

The objective of this study was to elucidate the effect of the psychological burden associated with problems with urination, defecation and sexual function on feelings of self.esteem in patients with prostate cancer. We surveyed 102 outpatients with prostate cancer, with an average age of 71.1 ± 7.1 years. As important predictive factors for self.esteem, we analyzed age, duration of treatment, and the psychological burden of problems with urination, defecation and sexual functions using a step.down multiple regression analysis. As a result, the multiple correlation coefficient(R)was 0.506 and the coefficient of determination(R2)was 0.192(adjusted for degree of freedom)in Model I with all independent variables. The multiple correlation coefficient (R)was 0.474 and the coefficient of determination(R2)was 0.201(adjusted for degree of freedom)in Model II. The increase in the coefficient of determination(ΔR2)was 0.009 and not significant. For the two variables in Model II, self.esteem was significantly affected by urination disorder burden(β=0.238, p=0.018)and sexual disorder burden(β=0.231, p=0.024). This indicates that patients' psychological burden affects their self.esteem to a greater extent than indicated by functional evaluation.
