Objectives: The purpose was to create and evaluate an educational program for its feasibility with local community residents on how to cultivate a community supporting spirit in the face of bereavement.

Methods: The education program was a single session of a lecture and group work conducted in two hours. The participants were 38 residents. The purpose of education was to raise knowledge about bereavement and social resources, and awareness and behavior regarding neighborhood support. It was evaluated using questionnaires and group interviews.

Results: Satisfaction with the educational program was high, and "knowledge about bereavement care" (P<0.05) raised significantly after the intervention. Those who had an experience in supporting end-of-life patients and their families in the neighborhood were significantly more likely to answer, "I would like to spread the importance of supporting the neighborhood who experiences bereavement" (P<0.01).

Conclusion: This educational program provided participants with the perspective of community supports in the face of bereavement, and could be used for local community development, dissemination, and enlightenment activities.
