Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate relationship of psychological well-being to activity of patients who were the victims of cerebravaschular accidents.

Eighty seven CVA patients from 44 to 94 years of age participated in this study. All resided in urban Tokyo, they attended the rehabilitation program to improve and maintain physical, mental, and social activity. They consisted of 55 men and 32 women. (average male age, 67.6 SD=8.3 and female age, 67.5 SD=12.7)

Psychological well-being was assessed using the PGC Morale Scale (revised by Lawton) and activity, by answers to 21 questions and the five-point Likert-type scale designed by the author. Four determing factors of Activity toward Attitudes were found to be pleasant and enjoyable living (firstorder factor), friendship and meeting of minds(second-order factor), feeling of dissatisfaction (thirdorder factor) and feeling of unfamiliarity and dullness (forth-order factor).

The following results were obtained; (1) significant correlation was observed between morale and activity at 0.26(p<.01), especially in the case of adults. (2) significant correlation between morale and age was 0.40(p<.01) in the 66-94 age group. (3) significant correlation between morale and public social services was observed 44-65 age group. (4) No significant correlation with ADL could be found.

Based on the present findings, psychological well-being would appear closely related to age.
