Abstract

In the present study, we obtained Candida yeasts recurrently isolated from three patients with leukemia who had been administered anti-cancer drugs as chemotherapy, although they were treated with anti-fungul drugs in the pediatrics ward. Candida albicans was also isolated from all of the bedside mothers. To elucidate origin of C. albicans colonized in these patients, we examined the strain-relatedness those of isolates from patients and their mothers by analysing the clinical events, distribution of the strains, and strain typing methods.

Several evidences such as clinical data and symptoms of the patient and/or results of DNA typing analysis of those isolates between the patient and the mother suggested the next assumption. A transmission of some of C.albicans strains from mother to patient was believed to have occurred among the strains from both of them, that is indicated an exogenous origin. But we could't exclude the possibility of endogenous origin of the colonization. Further analysis is rquired to make clear the infecting route of this pathogen.
