The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two types of glasses (prism and right half-field eye patched glasses) on normal subjects. The subjects were 6 normal adults with a mean age of 20.2 + 0.9 (prism intervention group), and 7 normal adults with a mean age of 20.9± 1.3 (right half-field eye patched glasses intervention group). Short-term (one time) and long-term (8 weeks) intervention using these two types of glasses was performed. Eye movement on the left side, and the center of gravity as an index of subjective internal midline (internal map or postural) bias were measured before and after intervention. Eye movement increased significantly on the left side and this increase lasted 4 weeks after short- and long-term prism intervention, but not after eye patch intervention. The center of gravity shifted significantly to the left after long-term prism intervention. The other hand, the center of gravity tended to move to the right side after long-term eye patched glasses intervention. Our findings suggest that prism glasses might be a more efficacious intervention than right half-field patched glasses for patients with unilateral spatial neglect.
