Based on the thoughts of patients' families provided by a questionnaire encouraging family members to describe their feelings freely, the roles of psychiatric occupational therapy were confirmed, and the matters that we should address in order to accomplish these roles were mentioned. These roles of psychiatric occupational therapy extracted from thoughts of patients' families coincided with roles that had been prescribed up to now-specifically the functional roles of psychiatric occupational therapists that were actually needed by patients' families. And the following issues were pointed out as necessary for future development : 1) Occupational therapists should fully acknowledge patients again as social beings. 2) Occupational therapists should understand the situation of institutions serving as living environments for patients. 3) Accumulation and systematic unification of intervention skills are necessary.
