The purpose of this study was to find out general characteristics of therapeutic aims shared with long-term hospitalized patients in a psychiatric occupational therapy setting. The Inventory Questionnaire on Occupational Therapy Aims Agreed with a Patient was used to analyze the responses of 72 psychiatric patients who agreed to have consensual interviews in the process of occupational therapy. The results showed the therapeutic aims most frequently agreed were related to the issues of physical health and wellness, pleasant and interesting experiences, and diversion and relaxations. The results of 37 patients, who had consensual interviews, twice showed the contents of agreement changed along with the progress of occupational therapy. These results suggest the importance of formalized consensual interviews using easy-to-understand wording with long-term hospitalized patients; i.e., the process of sharing occupational therapy aims is a basic ongoing helping process meant to increase awareness of meaning and value of daily living to avoid secondary dysfunction from long-term hospital care.
