We have very few biological measurments for psychiatric occupational therapy (OT). The present study was performed to examine relationships between occupational therapy and exploratory eye movement for one year.

OT was done in 32 schizophrenics with several occupational tasks. The OT was evaluated by the rate of OT attendance per one month and Work (W) scale of LASMI, and also mental status was evaluated by a positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS).

The patient eye movements were analyzed with an eye-mark recorder for four parameters: mean gazing time, total number of gazing points, mean and total scanning length of gazing points.

The schizophrenic patients had significantly longer mean gazing time and narrower eye movements. The increase group (22 persons) of rate of OT attendance was positively correlated with mean gazing time, mean and total scanning length. The W scale was also positively correlated with those parameters. The rate of OT attendance was positively correlated with the negative syndrome scale.

These findings are considered to be linked to cognitive deficits and also indicate a significant improvement in the exploratory eye movements in OT testing. The evaluation of the exploratory eye movements may be a useful tool as an additional evaluation of OT.
